Johnson - O'Malley Program (JOM)
Patasapsikw'ashapam miyanashma anatunatash shuyana tananawit.
We are going to teach the children what we learned about the Indian ways.
The Johnson O’Malley (JOM) Program provides academic and cultural support for our Native American students. Through classroom assistance and cultural lessons, the program helps students grow in their learning while celebrating and strengthening their cultural identity. Families and community connections are an important part of this work, and we’re excited to partner with you to support our students’ success.
When I visit classrooms, my main goal is to support our Native American (JOM) students with their learning. If a JOM student needs help with an assignment or is having a hard time with part of a lesson, I focus on providing that support during class.
While my primary responsibility is to assist Native American students, I’m also available to help other students in the classroom when needed. I work alongside teachers to support learning, encourage participation, and help create a positive, inclusive classroom environment.
My goal is to help all students grow academically while fostering cultural awareness and respect for Native traditions.
During scheduled pull-out times, JOM students take part in lessons that focus on Yakama Nation culture and the Sahaptin language.
In September and October, students learned a song in Sahaptin and practiced sharing it with a family member or friend. This helped build their confidence in using the language and strengthened connections between school, home, and culture.
From November through January, students will continue exploring Yakama traditions and seasonal activities such as root digging, huckleberry picking, and participation in the longhouse. They’ll also learn about traditional powwow dances and play stick games, a fun and meaningful Native American cultural activity.
